40 × 30 inches
acrylic, colored pencil, oil pastel on canvas
When we moved into our home a little over two years ago, I was excited about the raised garden beds in the backyard. Every spring, we say, this will be the year. But life has a way of filling the space we thought we'd have—job changes, a wedding, health challenges, a new dog, and everything in between.
Meanwhile, the garden grows on its own, filling with weeds and overgrowth, waiting for the season when we finally make it ours.
I started this painting thinking about that garden — and, in a larger sense, about all of the things we imagine we'll have the time or space for someday.
There is something strangely comforting about an unfinished garden.
It isn't a failure. It is simply waiting.
In the Garden of Could-Be grew from that feeling—the space between what is and what might be, and the quiet hope of all the things we keep believing we'll get around to someday.
