'Tenderness in the Ordinary' — 50x40" Vertical Painting

50 × 40 inches
acrylic and colored pencil on canvas

There’s a wall behind my studio that I look at daily and as each season passes.

It’s in a spot we hope to turn into a patio someday, a place to sit or hang out. For now, it’s just a mess.

The siding is stained and worn. There’s a wooden shelf that’s seen better days, a planter box, and a gray pipe running straight down the side like no one ever thought about how it would look.

And yet. Green is slowly climbing the wall anyway. Nobody planned it. It just found its way in.

I keep imagining what that corner could become. But somewhere along the way, I started noticing what it already is.

So much of our lives happens in places like this: the unglamorous corners, the patched-together, good-enough spaces we hardly notice because they’re so familiar. We tend to save our attention for the finished and the special. But the ordinary is where most of life is actually lived.

I started this painting wanting to look at that wall the way I’d look at something I loved. To slow down and notice the layers: what was built, what was added later, and what nature is quietly reclaiming.

The title, Tenderness in the Ordinary, is inspired by the place I kept finding it. Not in the polished version of the space I’m imagining, but in the worn edges and the in-between, in the quiet evidence of a place waiting to become something else.
